ASMR

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a calming, tingling sensation that runs throughout the body, particularly the spine, in response to a stimulus. I like to think about it as a calming chill that overcomes my body. This is triggered by calming images or sounds. Videos are the perfect media to share this sensation.

ASMR helps with a lot of different ailments. It can help reduce anxiety with its calming affects and can lull a restless person to sleep. It can help clear your wandering mind, or just be used for meditation.

While ASMR can be therapeutic, the effects are different for everyone. Some people may have extreme reactions to a video, while another person watching the same video will have no reaction at all. It is a newly developed technique and we are still learning about its affects and uses.

There are many different types of ASMR videos. They do not just have to be related to fountain pens, in fact most do not have fountain pens in the videos! ASMR videos can be found of people cooking, knitting, gardening (probably with a time lapse), and more! Any activity that is seen as calming is an excellent choice for an ASMR video.

The background sounds of the video are typically low key. There may even be no added sound at all, just the natural sounds of the activity being performed in the video as the sounds themselves may be considered calming. Other examples have soothing voice overs over the video. Any range can be found as long as together with the video, it creates a relaxing environment.

On top of staying on one topic, some ASMR videos have themes to them. One cool semi example of a themed ASMR video can be found here. The theme in the video is famous brand logos being hand drawn. The reason this is a semi example is because while it is neat to watch and fascinating, the music in the background is more upbeat rather than calming. In order to turn this into an ASMR video, this would need to be changed.

Since I have given a semi example at this point, but no full example, I will include this example full length ASMR video here from spinning knife productions and relaxingASMR on YouTube. This video more accurately represents the length of typical ASMR videos. They tend to be longer so you do not have to search for new videos that you like as often during your ASMR session.

The video gives a nice introduction by showing off a dip pen and letter opener set. This video uses a natural sound technique of using only the sounds created by the activity. If you listen, you can hear the pen being taken out of the box and all of the movements that go along with it.

I know what you are thinking at this point in the video, its a dip pen JT! Dip pens are different than fountain pens. Yes, I know, but a fountain pen ink is in fact used in the video, so that provides (hopefully) a saving grace. But if you can get past the fact that it is not a fountain pen, please go and enjoy the amazing handwriting that is created in the video and the relaxing effects it can have.

If you listen to the video, you can also hear the all of the small noises. You can hear the pen being dipped into the ink, the nib on the paper, and the soothing scratch as more words appear on the page. This is where headphones come in handy to hear all of the little things and fully immerse yourself in the virtual environment.

The video goes on and shows how the pen writes and draws for a couple of pages. You learn some cool cave facts and see an ink blot drawing (which in my opinion always turn out interestingly).

After the writing sample, the video shows how the pen is cleaned. Since it is a dip pen, it is cleaned differently than a fountain pen. This is due to the differences in mechanical design of the two different styles of pen. A dip pen has less parts to it and in some aspects can be easier to clean. Since this is an ASMR video, the cleaning is done in a more artistic and appealing way that is just so satisfying to watch.

The video ends with the pen being dried off and put away for safe keeping. This is an excellent ASMR video that shows exactly what the concept is all about: soothing sounds and images designed to calm someone down. If this video works for you, you will be more calm at the end, and if you feel a soft tingle down your spine, that is the meridian response.

A list of other fountain pen related ASMR videos:

  • Here is a video that is somewhat of a review of the Namiki Falcon in an ASMR style. This is a unique video that is a two-parter. Click here to see the second part.
  • This video uses a combination of natural sounds and added sounds to create a relaxing atmosphere. On top of calligraphy, this video teases with some awesome shots of sealing wax. Enjoy the intense sounds from this video!
  • While the video here starts off with a nice glass of chocolate milk, it continues into another spinning knife productions ASMR fountain pen video. This video has an example of the soothing voice over work that is common in ASMR videos.
  • Finally, here is a different, yet still fountain pen related ASMR video. This video shows the making of a quill (dip) pen.
